A Tribute To Humanity

This one was written as a tribute to the Gujarat Quake when i was in my ninth grade. The event shook us all, the irony being that it took place on the republic day. The last 2 stanzas refers to godhra.

A Tribute to Humanity

A rumbling noise was heard
A few birds scattered
Few table lamps shook
Somewhere a tumbler fell down

Suddenly the traffic signal froze
A deep cut upon the dwellings throat
People hurrying ang migrating
Where to? No one knows...

Life is cruel, though
No second chance to reconstruct
From dawn to dusk
Buildings turning to dust

Parks without grass, wells without water
City without people, People without laughter
Sacred images of life and death, ruling the city of slums
No where to go, no where to hide...

A doll amidst the rubble can be seen
But its owner is no where to be found
Who is going to live, die, we do not know
A one legged creature scattering around

One summer hence we stand
Holding one another's hand
Looking up as we all pray
Not to witness another quake

The Sun has set
And the moon never goes
And a pitch black atmosphere can be seen
Life on a cliff
Habits, Obscene
And the grass is anything but green

Or is this the calm before another storm?
